Murphy, a 20-year-old goaltender, is playing his first with the Canadians after playing junior hockey in the USA last season, splitting time between the Topeka RoadRunners of the NAHL and the New Jersey Hitmen of the NCDC.

Prior to starting his junior career, Murphy played three seasons for the Clifton Park Dynamo AAA team based in Clifton Park, NY.

“It was a big step to me because I played youth hockey, I played high school hockey but it was the first AAA, major kind of hockey that I played,” he said on his time with the Dynamo. “I think the coaches really prepared me well for (junior) so it was a good thing.”

During his time with the Dynamo, Murphy had strong statistical seasons when he was part of the elder group – posting a 1.56 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage as a 16-year-old in 16U hockey and a 1.64 GAA and .937 SV% in 18U in his final year with the Dynamo.

On the ice, Murphy said he tries to use his 6-foot-4 frame to fill the net and limit any holes to beat him.

“Being 6-4 definitely helps, but I think I rely more on my positioning than anything,” he added. “I can be athletic when I need to be, but I think positioning for me is the biggest key.”

Murphy said he expected to join a strong team when he arrived in Carleton Place for this season based on what he knew about the coaching staff and the teams the Canadians have had in the past.

“It’s been unreal, it’s definitely been my favourite place to play that I’ve played at so far. It’s exciting and I’m really enjoying it so far,” Murphy expressed of his time in Carleton Place to start the season.

Canadians fans have been able to see lots of Murphy to start the season as he has played all but three games this season. He has a 10-3-2 record to go with his 1.90 GAA, .922 SV% and two shut-outs in 15 games played, as of Oct. 26.
