Canadians stampede the Colts

After the Carleton Place Canadians had to come from behind and get an over-time win against the Cornwall Colts in their last meeting, the Canadians left no doubt in Thursday’s 6-2 win.

Carleton Place gave the Colts little time and room to do anything on the ice during even-strength play, as evident by out-shooting Cornwall 19-2 in the first period. Vincent Bujold-Roux wasn’t tested much during the game as a whole, making 15 saves in his season debut.

The Canadians were consistent in their offensive output, tallying two goals in each period. Cameron Patton started the offensive barrage 4:37 into the first period, getting some help from John Copeland who set up Patton on the play. Ben Tupker scored less than four minutes later to give Carleton Place as many goals as shots allowed in the frame.

Peyton Francis added to the Canadians lead with his first of two goals in the second period as there was a three-minute period where the two teams traded goals. After Francis scored his first, Ethan Mulhearn tarnished the perfect, yet not busy, night of Bujold-Roux with a power play goal 11:25 into the second period. Francis answered back with a goal 1:24 later to give Carleton Place a three-goal advantage heading to the third period.

Michael Carr’s workload was lightened in the third period as the Colts goaltender faced just 11 shots in the final regulation period, while his team-mates were able to test Bujold-Roux with 10 of their own in the period, after generating just seven shots in the first two periods.

The power play was the method of attack for Cornwall as both of their goals came on the man advantage. The second goal coming off the stick of Justin McRae 1:31 into the third period to possibly spark a little bit of momentum in their favour to start a come back.

Any chance of that withered away with Andrej Hromic answering back to the McRae goal just 1:11 after the Canadians lead was cut to two goals.

Tupker ensured the Carleton Place special teams weren’t kept off the board on Thursday as he tallied a power play goal midway through the final period.

Carleton Place will now continue its road trip with a road game in Hawkesbury in a game against the Hawks less than a week after erasing a three-goal deficit in the third period against the Hawks in Carleton Place. The Canadians will look to make sure Hawkesbury doesn’t exact any measure of revenge with the Hawks playing host on Friday.
