Press Release

January 4, 2010

The Carleton Place Canadians would like to announce a very special game this coming Friday January 8th versus the Cumberland Grads. Fifteen year veteran of the NHL, current member of the Ottawa Senators and Carleton Place native Shean Donovan will be honoured by the Canadians in a pre-game ceremony.
Born in Timmons On. , Shean grew up in Carleton Place where he attended school and began his hockey career early on with the Ottawa Valley Titans organization then on to a brilliant four year stint with the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s.

Since then Shean has played over 900 games for 7 teams including the San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and the Ottawa Senators, accumulating over 200 points and almost 700 penalty minutes.

Canadians add much need offence!

Oct 16, 2009

Head Coach and owner Jason Clarke knew his team needed some scoring punch and he got it in Alaska...yes you read it right, Alaska. The Canadians picked up 6'1, 210lb RW Matt Thompson, who played for the Belle Tire Midgets last season and was second on his team in scoring. Belle Tire had one of the top midget teams in North America last year and their Head Coach Chris Corey had nothing but great things to say about Matt. "He's the type of player that is consistent - very consistent. He has great size and wins a lot of one on one battles which allows him to create a lot of offensive chances for himself and his linemates." When Head Coach Clarke was asked about the pick up, he added, "Matt is just the type of player we are missing right now. We needed some size up front and with his offensive abilities he should be a great addition to our organization."

Canadians make a few player moves!

Oct 13, 2009

General Manager Jeff Hawkins was very busy over the past weekend. The Canadians sent Mitch Bird to the Kemptville 73's for an 8th round draft pick in 2010. They also sent their captain Jason McCarthy to the Cumberland Grads for a 5th round draft pick. In addition to making these deals, the GM also sent sent Matt Lafleur back to Jr.B in Almonte, where he will get more ice time and be able to work on his game.

When asked about the moves, Hawkins replied, "Our younger guys have been the ones carrying this team thus far and by dealing Bird and McCarthy it allows us to give more ice time to them. We felt as an organization it would be best to make room for our younger guys to develop. All three young men are good kids and we wish them the very best in their hockey futures."

Canadians select 14 players in first ever CJHL entry draft

May 30,2009

The Carleton Place Canadians chose 16 year old defenseman Dylan McDiarmid from Osgoode as the number one selection overall in Saturday’s 2009 CJHL entry draft held in Kemptville. The 6’2” ,195lb defenseman who played for the Upper Canada Minor Midget Cyclones last season is a “stay at home” defenseman who should be a solid blueliner on the Canadian lineup for several years to come. Carleton Place fans should also see a familiar face by the name of Kyle Phillips. The 18 year old forward was selected in the 4th round from the Carleton Place Jr. B Kings. Another familiar name to the Carleton Place hockey scene is Tanner Knight, son of former Carleton Place King, Rusty Knight. Tanner was chosen in the ninth round played for both the Mississippi Thunder Kings Minor Midgets and the Jr. B Kings this past season. The following is a complete list of the draft:

Canadians Make Two Deals Over The Weekend

May 27 2009

General Manger Jason Clarke was very busy over the weekend while attending the CJHL Prospects Camp. Clarke made two deals that will indeed make the future very bright for the Canadians.

Clarke dealt Kyle Cromie, Brett Varrin, Caz Cantwell and a fourth round draft pick in 2010 to the Pembroke Lumberkings in exchange for the playing rights to Ryan Lowe and Scott Shackell.

Ryan Lowe played for the Arnprior Packers and is a speedy left shot that can either play the wing or up the middle. Shackell just finished defeating the CP Jr B Kings in 7 games and all the local fans know just how good this tender is.

Clarke also traded the playing rights of McCauley Banning to the Nepean Raiders for a third round pick in the 2009 draft which will take place this weekend.

........................................................................................................................................

The Canadians were able to select local resident Zach Farris. The Canadians are excited to add a player of Zach's talent. He is a great skater who plays with an edge that most players fear. He will be a great addition to the club.

The Canadians were also able to select 3 players that played for Coach Clarke with the Carleton Place Jr. B Legion Kings. Goalie Jeff Stout who had an outstanding rookie season, two year player Matt Lafleur and Pat Barney. All three boys will be key pieces to the future of the Canadians franchise.

When asked, Coach Clarke commented on the four picks. "It's nice to get a player like Zach, a local player who has played for me in the past. He's a great character player and will be an on-ice leader for this club. He leads by example and the young players will feed off his work ethic. To get Stout, Lafleur and Barney was a surprise to us as an organization. I am thrilled to have all three players. These boys have played for me and know what is expected of them day in and day out. We have a solid base from the draft and now we need to build around the players we have selected!"

........................................................................................................................................

Assistant Coach Hired

The Carleton Place Canadians are pleased to announce the hiring of Colin Zappia. Colin was formerly the assistant coach of the Ottawa West Jr B Golden Knights who recently won the EOJBHL. Colin is the son of late Tony Zappia who coached, among others, the Cornwall Royals (OHL) and the Kanata Stallions. Hockey is in the blood of the Zappia family and Colin is following in his father's footsteps. When coach Clarke was asked about the hiring, he said, "Colin brings that extra element that every organization looks for...WINNING. He just finished winning a championship and the experience he will bring to the table will be very valuable in the building of our organization."
